History
Established: September 21, 1871 (141 years)
The lands of the current city of Araçuaí, during the eighteenth century, were linked to the former County of Serro Frio and then to the city of New Minas.
In the nineteenth century, Father Carlos Pereira de Moura was founded at the confluence of Araçuaí Jequitinhonha and the Village of Depth - pleasant place where the canoes docked permutavam goods from Bahia, as that region of the state. Where there canoeiras, there are women, liquor and lots of partying. This Father Carlos did not accept in his village, much less in future city planning, founding what did then? Drove out all whores who emigrated disoriented River Araçuaí above, finding shelter in Boa Vista, Luciana Teixeira. This good lady ceded their lands on the right bank of the Brook and River Rock Araçuaí, the emigrants were lodged.
Attracted by women, canoeists changed port and on-site developed into a camp, with the name of Rock, which gave rise to the present city of Araçuaí between the years 1830 and 1840.
The story Araçuaí began in 1817, when Luciana Teixeira decided to start an allotment on the river Araçuaí, the camp was called "Rock" because of the large amount of existing round stones.
Over time the site was gaining importance. Was elevated to the category of District Headquarters by Provincial Law July 13, 1857. The installation under the name Village Arassuay gave up on July 1, 1871, to finally the September 21, 1871 be raised to city status by virtue of Law No. 1870, with the name of Araçuaí. This name is of indigenous origin, and means of Macaws Rio Grandes.
Since then, the city grew on the banks of the delightful River Araçuaí main tributary of the Rio Jequitinhonha. With the opening of the road shooting the movement of buses and trucks replaced anavegação river, the boatmen only the memory left by the statue in the square of the characteristic matrix.
Araçuaí until 1891 was the capital of the entire Northeast of Minas. Occupied fourth place in the statistical number of traders in the mining municipalities. By the council passed the railroad Bahia & Minas (now closed) that the train station Araçuaí arrived in 1942.
The lack of an adequate infrastructure that provides the resources and absorb the production, unbalances the local agricultural economy by determining a general state of poverty among the rural population, making the region has to import food, forcing the exodus. Always linked to the problems of agriculture, infrastructural factors of the municipality of Araçuaí, especially the road system, are practically insurmountable for development.
The economic activities of the municipality are agriculture, livestock, trade, crafts, small footwear and dairy industries. The main source of wealth is cattle, who hold index enviable productivity. The land is rich in minerals and precious stones.
For many years the movement was considerable commercial city of Araçuaí. Today is not so great. The city of Araçuaí was a great center for trade. Received goods Peçanha, New Minas, Serro, Irons, Salinas and throughout the North Mine. The warehouses crammed with salt and other products of the sea waiting troops to exchange for crop products.
This commercial movement touched its peak from 1880 to 1885. From this date the troops changed tack: it was no longer to the north but to the south they were going, looking for markets closer and more accessible for their products. The trade Araçuaí was declining and with it the navigation Jequitinhonha. The import of goods moved from Bahia to Rio de Janeiro, the railroad changed from Bahia to Rio de Janeiro, the railroad to Minas Bahia transports them to Téofilo-Otoni, where the troops will receive them.
A haul road open through the forest between S. Miguel Jequitinhonha and Teófilo Otoni put in direct communication this season with opulent and fertile districts of the municipality. The city of Araçuaí and districts adjacent to each other and each other cambiando their products.
Despite its decline, trading Araçuaí is still considerable. The market square is a city of great movement, weekly markets, where farmers will sell their genres and buy what they need. Virtually all trade moved to the vicinity of the market. But the city no longer has large warehouses where fortunes rolled prince.
Subject of considerable trade is also colored stones, whose extraction began to be in 1901, at the Fazenda da Barra do Piauí and now has movement in trading Araçuaí. Not known in any municipality adventurer who has applied their capital in companies industries. The only ore mining industry in the county is the CBL (Companhia Brasileira Lithium).
Lately the city is modernizing, despite the fame that carries the "city ever had." The eternal policy always kills all initiative. To begin each other destroy. Actually what has changed in the last 30 years and was due to work of the residents who have improved their properties without the government had interfered with the development of the city.
It is worth highlighting the quiet work and steady the Diocese of Araçuaí taking forward the Bishop Severino Clasen and Bishop Emeritus Don Enzo Rinaldine who never measured efforts on behalf of the disadvantaged and the young people of this city. Maintains the hard technical school like few in Brazil without any help from the government. In addition, of course, other works that his profound modesty would not mention here.
Franciscan sisters also constitute another link in the development of Araçuaí. When you have created here and Nazareth College, 1926, went to great lengths to keep it until today. Him personalities studied this Gerais mines.
